NATUWAKALE WATTA MODEL VILLAGE PROJECT
KANDY DISTRICT-WEERAPITYA GN DIVISION
Developing the country through village upliftment The vision of the “Prosperity” Policy Statement is a need of the age to awaken such poor villages by mobilizing youth energy with the aim of making it a reality. The ability to manage existing land resources in a sustainable manner will support the achievement of the Sustainable Economic Goals of the country. The Land Use Policy Planning Department has prepared a Rural Land Use Plan for the village of Natuwakele in the year 2019 and it is expected to make this project a success based on that project as the basic premise of the project.
Accordingly, 05.02.2021 All the staff including the Director-General of the Land Use Policy Planning Department conducted a field visit to the Natuwakele area. The key issues identified in discussing issues with beneficiaries are as follows.
1. The basic problem is that since the landowners are on unauthorized occupation (lands belonging to the Land Reforms Commission), the main thing is to solve the land ownership issues (grant of land ownership).
2. To provide toilet facilities to the residents of the area to prevent adverse effects on the existing water sources in the area as the daily water needs of the area are met through springs, piped water, and canals.
3. As all the lands in this proposed project area have slopes, soil conservation work should be done first.
4. Taking action to conserve the existing water catchment areas in the area
5. Improving the cultivation of export crops (tea, coconut, cinnamon, pepper, areca nut, kithul, and beekeeping) to increase the forest cover in the area and to enhance the rural economy and home garden.
6. Establishment of Youth Entrepreneurship Committees for Unemployed Youth in the Area (Masonry, Carpentry, Tailors, Self Employed Market Creation, and Job Creation)
7. Construction of a public building to promote it as a multi-purpose development center
8. Improving animal husbandry activities.
