LAND TENURE AND OWNERSHIP SURVEY –PILOT PROJECT
Hambantota District - Tissamaharama Divisional Secretariat
Land ownership and possession are not two words that mean the same thing but have two interpretations. Ownership is a legal right of an individual. The existing information on land ownership and possession is insufficient. There are various reasons for this. This has a profound effect on decision-making at various stages of land allocation and planning. The national programs launched in this regard have not fully addressed or fully covered the entire geographical area of the country. As mentioned above, various problems have arisen as a result of the lack of specific data and information on land ownership and possession.
The need has arisen to conduct a detailed land tenure survey in Sri Lanka to address such issues and shortcomings. An enjoyment survey was conducted under three pilot projects.
As this program was implemented as a pilot project, three Divisional Secretariats were selected from three different climatic zones, and accordingly, a Divisional Secretariat Division was formed from the Kandy District in the Wet Zone, the Kurunegala District in the Intermediate Zone, and the Hambantota District in the Dry Zone. The pilot project was selected for implementation.
